I don't buy cards much anymore, but the other day I was looking around on Ebay, and saw some cards that were, to my mind, clearly fake.
Please be careful, especially if you're new and you don't know what to look for. I'd like to invite everyone to post their "How to spot fakes" tips here.
Here's mine: Sometimes fakes will take images from various sets, put a border on them, and sell them together. You can tell because the designs of the pictures are all so different.
One set where bootlegs are a big problem is Sailor Moon. We have a good Sailor Moon gallery, it's missing some of the rarer sets, but chances are, if a seller is selling a rare set, they know enough to give you information like who made the set and when it was made.

Sailor Moon
Hi, I always look for Sailor Moon's cards on the site Yahoo Japan and there are a lot of sets that they aren't original but Hong Kong copy.

Yes, I've seen that too!
Yes, I've seen that too! Actually, sometimes even the sellers know it, and they say "kaigaiban" or "overseas version" or even straight out "kaizokuban" = pirated version.
I have also seen fake Card Captor Sakura cards at an anime convention. I knew they were fake because of the packaging. Fakes will sometimes just copy from originals, and mess up in transferring the image. This would only happen in older sets with a sloppy company, you'd never see it now in a real set.
I'm still trying to decide if some one piece cards I got were fake. The prisms have different patterns, but otherwise the cards look good.

first tip: Look at our
first tip: Look at our gallery or ask at the forum if you are not sure.
second tip: official products always have some copyright information on them
third tip: double check items from hongkong sellers
I once brought some X fakes on ebay from a hongkong seller, never got all of my money back. By the way neither ebay nor paypal are really helpful in getting your money back so do not depend on them and you have to proof that the items are fake, which is more trouble then it sounds, unless you can speak with the japanese manufactures.
